There's a lot of good remixes out there, and I've been behind on them. I hope some of you listen to them, because I'd like to hear some great suggestions, particularly vocal ones.
Speaking of vocal.

You're not Alone vocal mix (http://www.imeem.com/silentyukiko/music/V_ymEgrM/katethegreat19_youre_not_alone_fan_vocal_version/)

I've been totally obsessed with this song lately. She pulls off such an awesome harmony with herself. She has some others that are good too.

http://www.youtube.com/user/katethegreat19

Also, one of everybody's favorites for tons of mixes: http://www.ocremix.org/

Any other great mixes to share, especially vocal ones?

I can't find it but on ocremix, there was an awesome singer who sang I think latin. She did the theme of that one opera scene in FF6. The one with Celes. I think she took the words from the game and translated them into Latin. Either way it's an awesome song to look for.

Damn, Zeit. That's actually really damn good.

If we're going for vocal remixes, here's one of my favorites:
http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01333/

It's called 'Prayer', and it's based on the Forest Temple Theme from Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

The Black Mages' Darkness and Starlight (part 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOp8miV--Gc)(second half of the Darkness and Starlight track, which is essentially the opera from FF6, plus the last song on the Darkness and Starlight album, which is an original tribute to someone the Black Mages wanted to give a tribute to)

Mwa ha ha ha. I actually don't like the singer they got for Celes' parts, but I love the rest of the song so much, I just have to deal.

Great voice. Sadly, I don't care for the song itself much. Does she have any other work?

Also: Every single one of The Black Mages's vocal tracks have been utter garbage. The other songs tend to be good, but they just need to stop with the vocals. This one included. I shudder at the reminder of "Other World"

dBu Music - Night of Visions (http://media.putfile.com/02-Night-of-Visions-Imperishable-Night)
Remix of Level 1 music from Imperishable Night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperishable_Night).

Agreed, Zeit, but the only thing I don't like about Darkness and Starlight is Celes' singer. She sounds old and fat, like the traditional image of the opera prima donna (I guess; for a concrete example, think of Carlotta from the movie version of Phantom of the Opera), definitely not someone relatively young and pretty, which is pretty much what all of the art for Celes points to.

But yes, The Black Mages pretty much suck at vocal tracks.

Star Ocean - Summertime (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01388/)

There should be a player built in ready to use there. I used to listen to this song all the time.

OHMAHZEE I <3 Hale-Bopp!! They've also got a Metroid song that's not on OCR. It's called "Salutations (http://media.putfile.com/Salutations-by-Hale-Bopp)" and was featured in the Metroid month of Dwelling of Duels (http://dod.vgmix.com/).

That blurb for Summertime also links to "The Ken Song" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01266/). Another good one.

Oh, that reminds me. One guy I've been thinking of recently is the remixer silent. He's got two songs on OCR, "Tororian Love Song (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00991/)" from FF4, and "In the Atrium (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01068/)" from Ninja Gaiden 2.

EDIT: And of course, who could forget The Rabbit Joint's Zelda Cover (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00022/)? (I know I did, but I remembered so nyah.)
To listen to it, you have to download as it appears to be too small to be able to be played through the embedded player on OCR. It's short, just over a minute.

I love the style in the Metroid one, though I don't normally like it when they have this static-y sound, but for some reason it was actually quite appropriate there.

Ken song is also very nice.

I think I would have enjoyed the Tororian Love Song without the lyrics. His voice is ok, but it doesn't really do it for me. What really ruins it is the fact that the lyrics suck. It's like something I'm trying to make up off the top of my head.

In The Atrium... very different. I actually had this one on my computer but never really listened to it. On Ninja gaiden I'm going to direct you to: this ninja gaiden remix (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00338/) as one of my more favorites.

I was reading the description of the Zelda Cover song. I can't believe people started sharing the file giving false credentials (system of a down wut?). This wouldn't happen if stupid people did not change their file names and distribute them.

I actually listened to this song (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00383/) before I even beat the game, so it was a new song. Later on, when I heard the original, I ended up liking djpretzels singing better. It's funny, because I usually prefer women's voices.

I also don't usually like remixes of songs that are so new that they don't really need any remastering, but man. This MGS2/DMC (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00690/) song is epic.

Yeah, that guy (silent) definitely needs to polish his singing before he does it a lot, but considering that remixes are usually products of boredom, free time or a hobby, I think he did a pretty good job, especially in the difference between his first song (FF4 one) and his second one (NG2 one). He's not afraid to sing all over his register, and even some beyond it, and he manages to sing well enough to not suck. He doesn't sound the best, but I think he still deserves props for doing it.

virt - Super Metroid - Crystal Flash (http://media.putfile.com/Crystal-Flash)

You guys have probably heard this one, though.

Yep, virt's remixes are nice.
He also did the soundtrack for Contra 4, which is just awesome.

Psycho + J - Metal of Okkusenman (http://media.putfile.com/Psycho--J---Metal-of-Okkusenman)
Some weird cover of Megaman 2, Wily Stage 1.

Wise Fwom Your Gwave!

So, I just got around to downloading Bad Dudes & Friends - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Resurrection (http://www.oneupstudios.com/ep_06.php). I think I like "Wood Striking Partita (Main)" the best, but it's all very good stuff (as are the older EPs). Apparently they're working on a Chrono Trigger EP for this month, it should be awesome.

On the heavier side of things (SID metal, to be specific), I've been listening to Machinae Supremacy a lot lately. Particularly their C64 remixes (http://www.remix64.com/member_gordon.html), which are really impressive IMO.

Also, while on the topic of cool C64 remixes I never see mentioned anywhere, have some Armageddon Man (http://www.remix64.com/tune_144500.html). Some very nice jazz vocals in this one. Together with the short rap section in one the aforementioned SoTN songs, I think that meets the vocals quota for this post.

Finally, I've been listening to The American Album (http://www.mazedude.com/aa/) a lot lately. A tribute to american composers, so games like Earthworm Jim, Grim Fandango, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, etc. My favorite is "Zapper's Freedom", from Myst 2: Riven.

That Jazz song is pretty sweet. I prefer actual singing over do's and da's, but it sounds good nevertheless.

Ahah, I'm listening to a Day of the Tentacle song from the The American Album. Guy says it's his favorite soundtrack but I hardly noticed the music in the game. It's definitely... unique.

I also tried Zombies Ate my Tracker, but it's a little too industrial for my tastes. Though it's certainly not like Children of the OMGSUX Machine.

Well naturally I couldn't resist the Secret of Evermore one, since it's one of my favorite soundtracks. Very nice, and good track choice too.

It seems there's a very small amount of games they use there, they repeat. Are there really so few American composed games? Some of them seem kind of obscure too.

There usually aren't too many vocal mixes I listen to a lot, but I think that's due to a lack of vocal mixes. There's always Dragon Song (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01404/) though!

Incidentally, I've also been listening to a lot of virt tracks lately, including the winner of the Adventure Games Month (http://dod.vgmix.com/past/april06/) at DoD, "Look Behind You!"

Day of the Tentacle + Monkey Island = Win.

There are plenty of American-composed games, although a lot of them are probably pc games. Contra 4 (for DS) was composed by virt though, and he's american! That's one example anyway, lol.

Didn't do it for me. The music wasn't really my taste, and it barely even resembled the original. Just some background notes that play a song from the game. And I didn't like the vocals because I don't like vocals where the singer sounds like he should be in N'Sync or something.

This month's DoD has been pretty awesome. (http://dod.vgmix.com/) I usually only have a few favorites per month, but this month just kicked my ass. They haven't been up very long yet, so who did what is still unknown. If I had to pick a #1, it would probably be Enter the Turtle, although the ActRaiser one is right up there.

Anyway, my favorites this month:

A Coele Usque Ad Centrum (ActRaiser)
Let's Croak Toads!!! (Bucky O'Hare (NES))
Belmonts and Bondage (Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Gameboy))
Der Orden vom heiligen Geist (Dragon's Lair (NES))
Burning Villages Down (Golden Axe 2)
To Reminisce is to Relive (Journey to Silius, Batman, Bionic Commando, Werewolf: The last warrior, Ninja Gaiden)
Where No Mann Has Gone Before (part 1) (Super R-Type)
Funk Like an Egyptian (The Lost Vikings)
Enter the Turtle (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
BTMNTBAMLOL (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project)

It was so smooth I didn't even notice it without you saying so.

As for the remix, it's just that, a remix at the strictest level. Not much enhancing from the original SNES quality instruments, mostly overlapping and stuff. Of course, both good songs, it still sounds nice, but I can't imagine it required much time or skill to make. Needs more enhancement.

Bloodcinder
04-14-2009, 07:19
Actually, it's not just a mixing job. It's been completely resequenced as a MIDI. The reason it sounds like there wasn't much effort is that the guy reproduced the soundfonts from the originals in their entirety so the instruments are authentic. The CT theme had to be transposed to a higher key, too. I think it took him several months.

Bodomi
04-14-2009, 08:11
Not MIDI, it's MOD. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module_file)

And I happen to have that mod right here. (http://bodomi.servebeer.com/bodi/zerolavo(tssf).xm) :)

Bloodcinder

Blame the author. He said it was MIDI.

Seegtease
04-14-2009, 17:25
Oh man. I used to have a TON of random MOD files, xm, s3m, mod, whatever other types. Back in the day, this was all the good stuff because it was better than midi, and still had a relatively small file size. Good because it was harder to find mp3s (and no torrents) plus my bandwidth sucked. Isn't a MOD kind of like a midi with the soundfonts integrated in each file (and therefore will also sound the same on all computers)?

By the way, anybody know any good MOD remix sites?

Trogdor

By the way, anybody know any good MOD remix sites?

No. :D

Lately I've been listening to a lot of stuff from Opus.XERO (http://opus-xero.com/) and Famicom Guitar (http://famicom-guitar.hp.infoseek.co.jp/).

KICKBUTT.exe (http://www.robertsonwoodworks.com/universalstorage/qcj/) from Quarter-Circle Jab is pretty good. I especially like the Soul Blazer tracks. It should be noted that although there is a rar, the zelda tracks might need to be downloaded individually. Those tracks were updated on account of a little mistake that caused some pops/clicks, but the mp3s in the rar hadn't been updated when I grabbed it.

Also, some stuff from C76 like Six Six Six (http://vgmdb.net/album/14441) and Muscle Spark (http://vgmdb.net/album/14866). Just album info on those links, although I could probably track down a mediafire link or something for them if anyone is interested. Six Six Six is basically a bunch of rockin' FF tunes. There are a few sample tracks here (http://www.human-bbq.com/666.html). Muscle Spark is also rock, all from Kunio-kun games (River City Ransom, Renegade, Nintendo World Cup Soccer, Super Dodgeball, etc.). There's a demo for it here (http://tinycartridge.com/post/183001276/muscle-sparks-kunio-kun-sampler-this-newly).
