I just watched a special of A&E ("MindControl (http://www.aetv.com/listings/episode_details.do?episodeid=256508&airingid=256983)").

They focused on the Ministries of Meade and the House of Yahweh.

The House of Yahweh is, sadly, based in Abilene, Texas. Founded by Yisrayl Hawkins, the cult is based on Hawkins' self-proclaimed prophetic abilities.

However, none of his predictions have ever come true. The investigative reporter even talked to one of the members about it, proving to him that Hawkins isn't really a prophet, and the member just got frustrated and asked the reporter to leave.

The Nuclear War predictions:

Starting September 12, 2006

Hawkins announced in the House of Yahweh's February 2006 newsletter that nuclear war would start September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006). He claimed it is a part of the HoY's commission to warn the nations and the people of the world. He was interviewed on the Channel 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_4) web show thisisaknife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thisisaknife) about his apocalyptic predictions. Among other things, he claimed that Abilene, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene,_Texas) would be saved from the impending destruction and invited the show's presenter to join him there so he would be safe.

Despite nuclear war not starting on September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12), his website nonetheless stated that the prophecy had been fulfilled. On September 22 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_22), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006) Hawkins updated the website (http://www.yisraylhawkins.com/) to change his prediction. He said September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12) was only the starting point for nine months of nuclear war which would kill a third of all humanity, followed by a further four months of war that will darken the skies. He did not explain why there has been no sign of nuclear war since his predicted start date.

Starting June 12, 2007

Later, Hawkins amended his prediction to state that a nuclear war was only conceived on September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), and that it would follow the natural birth cycle of a woman, finally being "born" nine months later on June 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_12), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007). On May 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_7), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007) a new counter was put up on his website, counting down to the June 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_12) date when supposedly, the "Nuclear Baby" (conceived September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12)) would be born.

Whether the entire nuclear event was to take place on that date, or in the months leading up to was never made clear. He also stated that by four months after June 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_12), October 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_13), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), four-fifths or 80% of the human race would be dead from nuclear war.

Starting June 12, 2008

Most recently, he has stated the nuclear war would begin on Thursday June 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_12), 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008). Since the passing of this date without incident, Hawkins has yet to predict another date for a nuclear war.

Apparently Hawkins is rich as hell and he makes his followers live in constant poverty. Here's a shot of the compound. The central building is the church, I guess, and the outer trailers are where he makesthe people live.

They have all the women living like Muslim women (covered from head to toe). If you have a daughter, when she turns 12 you have to "prepare her to be with the King" which I assume is Hawkins himself. Hawkins is said to have 30 wives now, and a countless number of children. Additionally, he insists that all children change their last name to 'Hawkins' to become "his children".

It's weird as hell.

They didn't give as much information on the Ministries of Meade (attached screen of mansion) other than it's a very rich, luxurious compound where, to join, you must sever all outside contact and remain in the mansion compound forever. The followers also model themselves after their founder, Charles Meade. It is based in Lake City, Florida.

Anyway, ever had any experiences with cults? Are they any cults based near where you live?

Not really. A long time ago there was this group called the "Pratt Church" that were in this area, but I think they've long since disbanded.
Nowadays it's mostly just... the standard denominations and sects everyone's heard of, along with some communities of Mennonites. At least, as far as I know. There could be some hidden sects, but I've not heard anything about them.

Bob Jones University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bju) is located in Greenville, SC, which is one county over from me. They're not really a cult, but they are pretty weird.

Again, not really a cult, but a fair amount of Pentecostals are pretty weird. Has anyone ever seen Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_camp) Camp (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486358/)?

General joke about religion.

Effusive apology.
