This thread is for those who wish to post lyrics of songs to share with other people, to discuss the meanings of the songs and why they're important to you.
This will prevent the Audiovisual club from becoming... overcluttered.
Rules:
1. No more than 2 songs per post, we don't need a lyrical overload
2. You have to have some exposition regarding the song, eg. why it's important to you, what you like about it, does it have some special meaning?
3. Title and author is a must. Make sure we know the song name and the artist.
4. You can disagree with someone's taste of music, but try to leave the "OMG I HATE ALL THINGS _____" at the door. flamewars belong in the pit. ;)
Enjoy!

Artist: Panic At The Disco
Title: She had The World
Video(if you want to hear it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg3-X9t7GCI
She held the world upon a string.
But she didn?t ever hold me.
She spun the stars on her fingernails.
But it never made her happy.
Because she couldn?t ever have me.
She said she?d won the world at a carnival.
But she couldn't ever win me.
Because she couldn?t ever catch me.
I?I know why.
Because when I look in her eyes, I just see the sky.
I don?t love you. I?m just passing the time.
You could love me.
If I knew how to lie?
But who could love me?
I am out of my mind.
Throwing a line out to sea.
To see if I can catch a dream.
The sun was always in her eyes.
She didn't even see me.
But that girl had so much love.
She?d want to kiss you all the time.
Yeah, she'd want to kiss you all the time.
She said she?d won the world at a carnival.
But I'm sure I didn?t ruin her, just made her more interesting.
I?I know why.
Because when I look in her eyes, I just see the sky.
I don?t love you. I?m just passing the time.
You could love me.
If I knew how to lie?
But who could love me?
I am out of my mind.
Throwing a line out to sea.
To see if I can catch a dream.
This song instantly drew me in. It is nothing like Panic at the disco used to sound. The words;
" I don?t love you.
I?m just passing the time.
You could love me.
If I knew how to lie?
But who could love me?
I am out of my mind.
Throwing a line out to sea.
To see if I can catch a dream."
especially speak to me. This is much how I felt with my last bf. He was just a break in my normal life. Something to pass the time. I NEVER loved him. I just needed a change. I don't think I am out of my mind but I know I am hard to love because I don't accept people easily. The last two I take them as he is just with this person till he find someone better. If you changed all the she's to he's in this song its pretty much sums up how I felt about him, with some nice music and vocals =) I bolded my favourite lines. But in general I love this song. I am going to make a video of me singing it eventually.

The Becoming - Nine Inch Nails
I beat my machine
It's a part of me
It's inside of me
I'm stuck in this dream
It's changing me
I am Becoming
The me that you know he's had some second thoughts
He is covered in scabs he is brokenand sore
The me that you he doesn't come around much
That part of me
Isn't here anymore
All pain disappears
It's the nature of
Of my circuitry
Drowns out all I hear
No escape from this
My new Consciousness
The me that you know he used to have feelings
But the blood has stopped pumping and he is left to decay
The me that you know is now made up wires
Even when I'm with you, I'm so far away
I can try to get away
But I've strapped myself in
I can try to scratch away the sound in my ears
I can see it killing away all my bad parts
I dont want to listen but its all too clear
Hiding backwards inside of me I feel so unafraid
Annie, hold a little tighter I might just slip away
Won't Give Up
Wants me Dead
Goddamn this noise inside my head
I enjoy this song quite a bit, the first 4 stanzas speak to me more than anything else. It reminds me how I've changed quite a bit then who I used to be.. perhaps not such a drastic change as the singer has, but I have on occasion noticed how superficial emotions can me and how to just.. switch them off. I dunno.
GOOD TIMES.
Artist: James Gang
Song: Funk #49
Sleep all day, out all night
I know where you're goin'
I don't think that's actin' right
You don't think it's showin'
Jumpin' up, fallin' down
Don't misunderstand me
You don't think that I know your plan
What you try'n'-a hand me?
Out all night, sleep all day
I know what you're doin'
If you're gonna act that way
I think there's trouble brewin'

Just a reminder, please post why the song is important to you. :)
It's important to me because it's a damn good classic rocker. Joe Walsh at his finest.

You know, I was thinking about this thread today on my drive home.
"Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" by Warren Zevon
Roland was a warrior
From the land of the midnight sun
With a Thompson gun for hire
Fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark
On a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra
To join the bloody fray
Through '66 and '7
They fought the Congo War
With their fingers on their triggers
Knee-deep in gore
For days and nights they battled
The Bantu to their knees
They killed to earn their living
And to help out the Congolese
Roland the Thompson gunner
Roland the Thompson gunner
His comrades fought beside him
Van Owen and the rest
But of all the Thompson gunners
Roland was the best
So the CIA decided
They wanted Roland dead
That son of a bitch Van Owen
Blew off Roland's head
Roland the headless Thompson Gunner (Time, time, time, for another peaceful war)
Norway's bravest son (Time stands still for Roland, 'til he evens up the score)
They can still see his headless body
Stalking through the night
In the muzzle flash
Of Roland's Thompson gun
In the muzzle flash
Of Roland's Thompson gun
Roland searched the continent
For the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa
In a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun
He didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body
From there to Johannesburg
Roland the headless Thompson gunner
Roland the headless Thompson gunner
Roland the headless Thompson gunner
(Talking about the man)
Roland the headless Thompson gunner
The eternal Thompson gunner
Still wandering through the night
Now it's ten years later
But he still keeps up the fight
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine, and Berkley...
Patty Hearst heard the burst
Of Roland's Thompson gun and bought it
This was one of my favorite songs growing up. I never really thought of the message of it until recent years. The song itself is more like a ballad poem, flowing quickly from one verse to the next. The mood and tone are also set very well by the use of just a few powerful instruments: the piano, drum, and organ.
What Zevon has done is adapt the medieval Song of Roland and turn it completely on its head by putting it into a more modern setting (just ignore the fact this song is more than 30 years old and bear with me).
As they say, "those who live by the sword, die by the sword"; Roland lived a life immersed in combat, and found only his death as a reward. Whatever reward Van Owen could have expected for his betrayal was made meaningless when he himself lost his life. Finally, although Roland gets his revenge, he never gets peace.
Although Zevon wrote this song years ago, his message remains just as poignant. War continues to embroil much of the world, from outright war in Iraq and Afghanistan, to explosive violence and terrorism in cities across the world, to the crime that takes place on a day to day basis just about anywhere.
To meet violence with violence is simply self-defeating; Roland is proof of that.

One Body Too Many ~ Winds of Plague
As seen in my sig
Lyrics
~~~~
Burn me out of your mind, this is a place i cannot be anymore
every inch of ground is paved with lies.
Your only concern is for yourself, no mercy
no remorse for the innocent.
Your the bearer of a dozen faces and every last one is destined to be broken now
drop to your knees and lose the last of your pride.
Your only concerned for yourself.
You have crossed me once, next time your done, next time you will learn the hard way
not to toil with a mind thats lost all hope.
Broken bonds and envious ties, my only chance is to turn inside, everyday the colors fade
to black and white.
I see the world through cold eyes.
Every inch of ground is paved with lies, every emotion dead, all faith has perished.
No Mercy, No remorse for the innocent.
You are fucked
~~~~
Why
~~~~
It is the essence of bad ass and how I feel when I think of a few people that are supposedly in my life right now.
Fountains of Wayne
Someone to Love
Seth Shapiro got his law degree
He moved to Brooklyn from Schenectady, '93
Got some clients in the food industry
He says it's not the money, it's the recipes
He calls his mom, says he's doing fine
She's got somebody on the other line
Puts Coldplay on, pours a glass of wine
Curls up with a book about organized crime
When it's late, and it's hot
And a date with the Late Show's all that you've got
Don't give out, don't give up
One of these nights you might find someone to love
Beth McKenzie got the job of her dreams
Retouching photos for a magazine aimed at teens
It's Thursday night she should be out on the scene
But she's sitting at home watching "The King of Queens"
There's something wrong that she can't describe
She takes the contacts out of her eyes
Sets the alarm for 6:45
So she can get a little exercise
When it's late, and it's hot
And an hour in the shower is the best that you've got
Don't give out, don't give up
One of these nights you might find someone to love
And you're not the only one who's lonely
Seth Shapiro is trying in vain
To hail a taxi in the morning in the pouring rain
Beth McKenzie sees one just up ahead
She cuts in front of him and leaves him for dead
It doesn't really apply currently, but I still love this song but it is inspirational.
Streetlight Manifesto - A moment of Silence
A moment of silence, please, for those who never get the chance
They show up to the party, but they're never asked to dance
The losers, the liars, the bastards, the thieves
The cynicists, the pessimists, and those that don't believe in nothing
I never met a loser that I didn't see eye-to-eye with, I declare
I stare into your eyes
But you look right past me into the air
What's it like to stand in your shoes?
To have never felt the belt of somebody's abuse?
I take the bottle and I tip it for all my heroes that have passed
Alas, you have left us, but your stories they will last
Uninspired by the recruiting call
Independent we stand
Independent we fall
So tell me: how long do you think you can go before you lose it all?
Before they call you bluff and watch you fall?
I don't know, but I'd like to think I had control
At some point, but I let it go and lost my soul
Sit tight, but the revolution's years away
I'm losing faith and I'm running low on things to say
So, I guess I have no choice but to regurgitate
The tired anthem of a loser and a hypocrite
Oh! To have died that night, I realized it wouldn't last
Our days were numbered and the reaper tipped the hourglass
The final mayday of our sinking ship had come and passed
Oh! To the west, you don't know what it is you're running from
And everybody's laughing loud
Your last chance to make your mother and your father proud
Oh, oh, oh...
A moment of silence, please, for those who never get the chance
They show up to the party, but they're never asked to dance
The losers, the liars, the bastards, the thieves
The cynicists, the pessimists, and those that don't believe in nothing
They said "a pox,
Upon your house,
Upon your family and everyone you knew
And everyone you'll ever meet"
I bet they think we wish we joined when we could
But we do what we want, we don't do what we should
Now, everybody's laughing, 'cause they're thinking they're in on something I don't get
Don't forget
I connect and I read every word you said
Like a child who believes he was wronged
If you hate me so much, then stop singing my songs
So tell me: how long do you think you can go before you lose it all?
Before they call you bluff and watch you fall?
I don't know, but I'd like to think I had control
At some point, but I let it go and lost my soul
Sit tight, but the revolution's years away
I'm losing faith and I'm running low on things to say
So, I guess I have no choice but to regurgitate
The tired anthem of a loser and a hypocrite
Oh! To have died that night, I realized it wouldn't last
Our days were numbered and the reaper tipped the hourglass
The final mayday of our sinking ship had come and passed
Oh! To the west, you don't know what it is you're running from
And everybody's laughing loud
Your last chance to make your mother and your father proud
Oh, oh, oh...
Reason?Well, other then this being one of my favorite bands, and to shorten a long story, the song really hits home.
Coldplay Viva la Vida
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)
Hear Jerusalem bells are ringings
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh
I accidentally got this song stuck in my head today even though I can't remember the last time I heard it. I think I was thinking about the failures of our modern society. One of those is made explicitly clear in the song. It's Easier than Love by Switchfoot.
Sex is currency. She sells cars. She sells magazines.
Addictive bittersweet, clap your hands with the hopeless nicotines.
Everyone's a lost romantic since our love became a kissing show.
Everyone's a Casanova. Come and pass me the mistletoe.
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone.
She is easier than love, is easier than life.
It's easier to fake and smile and bribe.
It's easier to leave. It's easier to lie.
It's harder to face ourselves at night,
Feeling alone. What have we done?
What is the monster we've become?
Where is my soul?
Sex is industry, the CEO of corporate policy,
A skin-deep ministry. Suburban youth, hail your so-called "liberty."
Every advertising antic our banner waves with a neon glow.
War and love become pedantic. We wage love with a mistletoe.
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone.
Sex is easier than love, is easier than life.
It's easier to fake and smile and bribe.
It's easier to leave. It's easier to lie.
It's harder to face ourselves at night,
Feeling alone. What have we done?
What is the monster we've become?
Where is my soul?
I heard this song on the way back from lunch and it was so catchy it stuck in my head all the way back to my desk. The song is Welcome, Ghosts by Explosions in the Sky.~Instrumental~I got the idea to do this before someone bumped the thread. It just happened to be convenient timing.
I was singing this at BC the other day, and remembered how delightfully insane the late Mr. Wesley Willis was.
Wesley Willis - "They Threw Me Out of Church"
Once upon a time, I was cursing in Daniel's A.M.E. Zion Church.
I called one of the decons a motherfucker.
Reverend Henry A. Miller preached about my vulgar language.
He told the congregation in the sanctuary that I got a nasty, filthy mouth.
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church.
For the second time, I told the preacher to fuck off.
I also told Reverend Henry A. Miller to suck a male camel's dick.
He got so tired of my bullshit.
He asked one of the decons to throw me out.
He then escorted me to the door.
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church.
When I went to church that same Sunday, I picked up a 2 x 4.
I went up to the pulpit and conked the preacher in the head.
He fell to the floor unconscious.
Suddenly, the police was called on me.
I then ran out of the church with my grin on my face being chased after by the cops.
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church,
They threw me out of church!
Rock over London; rock on, Chicago.
Diet pepsi, uh-huh!
This song is "The Stranger" by the Seattle-based acoustic metal band The Senate. I heard it first at a concert they did at my school, and recently I decided to learn it on the piano and play and sing it myself.
The Stranger
By Oliver Franklin
? 2007 Reeling From The Stitch (ASCAP)
The end is over
The seas have come to claim their dead
The saints surrendered
And loosed the chains around their heads
And death and glory cried for mercy
So sleep, my darling
Believin' not a word they said
And they drowned in the wine and felt so fine
And left the earth to me
And the Stranger said, "The hangman's dead
and down his hanging tree"
The end is over
The veil has ripped itself apart
The none are standing
And none shall hold this hungry heart
And only now, my breath has broken
So sleep, my darling
When morning comes, the song will start
And they drowned in the wine and felt so fine
And left the earth to me
And the Stranger said, "The hangman's dead
and down his hanging tree"
I Like Birds - Eels
from Daisies of the Galaxy
I cant look at the rocket launch
The trophy wives of the astronauts
And I wont listen to their words
cause I like
Birds
I dont care for walkin downtown
Crazy auto-car gonna mow me down
Look at all the people like cows in a herd
Well, I like
Birds
If youre small and on a search
Ive got a feeder for you to perch on
I cant stand in line at the store
The mean little people are such a bore
But its alright if you act like a turd
cause I like
Birds
If youre small and on a search
Ive got a feeder for you to perch on
Ive got a feeder for you to perch on
If youre small and on a search
Ive got a feeder for you to perch on
Ive got a feeder for you to perch on
Tiger in My Tank - Eels
from Daisies of the Galaxy
I bought some rock star ashes
From the back of a rolling stone
I guess he wouldn't mind it
He couldn't sell his soul
The tiger in my tank
Is going to extinct
And I'm not feeling so good myself
I think I'm on the brink of disaster
I had a dream last night
The TV and the phone
Grew some legs and took a walk
And left me all alone
The tiger in my tank
Is going to go extinct
And I'm not feeling so good myself
I think I'm on the brink of disaster
When I grow up I'll be
An angry little whore
I'll give you all the finger
I'll tell you all what for
The tiger in my tank
Is going to go extinct
And I'm not feeling so good myself
I think I'm on the brink of disaster
ON TOPIC
This song reminds me of the struggle me and my best friend/x bf went through to make things work. I am so happy he found someone he can be happy with.
Secondhand Serenade - Fall For You
the best thing about tonight's that we're not fighting
could it be that we have been this way before?
i know you don't think that i am trying
i know you're wearing thin down to the core
but hold your breath because
tonight will be the night that
i will fall for you over again
don't make me change my mind
i won't live to see another day
i swear it's true
because a girl like you is impossible to find
you're impossible to find
this is not what i intended
i always swore to you i'd never fall apart
you always thought that i was stronger
i may have failed,
but i have loved you from the start
oh, but hold your breath because
tonight will be the night that
i will fall for you over again
don't make me change my mind
or i won't live to see another day
i swear it's true
because a girl like you is impossible to find
it's impossible
so breathe in, so deep
breathe me in
i'm yours to keep
but hold on to your words
'cause talk is cheap
and remember me tonight when you're asleep
because tonight will be the night that i will fall for you, over again
don't make me change my mind
or i won't live to see another day
i swear it's true
because a girl like you is impossible to find
tonight will be the night that i will fall for you over again
don't make me change my mind
or i won't live to see another day
i swear it's true
because a girl like you is impossible to find
you're impossible to find.
You did not understand
Let me rephrase the question
Your comments are killing me
Why won't you stop talking?
Enough of all this noise
I have a headache
I have a HEAD ACHE
You think it might be,
Might be a tumor?
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
You think it might be,
Might be a tumor?
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
Stop talking!
Stop talking!
It does not matter
Who my daddy is
Who is asking you the question?
So just LISTEN (LISTEN, LISTEN)
LISTEN TO ME!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
My daddy is not a fireman
He is probably big,
But he is not a wrestler
He is definitely...
Not a basketball coach
But all these questions
Give me a HEAD ACHE
Now:
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
I discovered an amazing song today.
The Mariner's Revenge Song by The Decemberists
http://www.unitedempire.net/deathofcheese/music/marinersrevenge.mp3
spoiler'd for length
We are two mariners
Our ship's sole survivors
In this belly of a whale
Its ribs are ceiling beams
Its guts are carpeting
I guess we have some time to kill
You may not remember me
I was a child of three
And you a lad of eighteen
But I remember you
And I will relate to you
How our histories enterweave
At the time you were
A rake and a roustabout
Spending all your money
On the whores and hounds
You had a charming air
All cheap and debonair
My widowed mother found so sweet
And so she took you in
Her sheets still warm with him
Now filled with filth and foul disease
As time wore on you proved
A debt-ridden drunken mess
Leaving my mother
A poor consumptive wretch
And then you disappeared
Your gambling arrears
The only thing you left behind
And then the magistrate
Reclaimed our small estate
And my poor mother lost her mind
Then one day in spring
My dear sweet mother died
But before she did
I took her hand as she dying cried
"Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole until he
Wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling
Of his grave"
It took me fifteen years
To swallow all my tears
Among the urchins in the street
Until a priory
Took pity and hired me
To keep their vestry nice and neat
But never once in the employ
Of these holy men
Did I ever once turn my mind
From the thought of revenge
One night I overheard
The prior exchanging words
With a penitent whaler from the sea
The captain of his ship
Who matched you toe to tip
Was known for wanton cruelty
The following day
I shipped to sea
With a privateer
And in the whistle
Of the wind
I could almost hear...
"Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole until he
Wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling
Of his grave
There is one thing I must say to you
As you sail across the sea
Always, your mother will watch over you
As you avenge this wicked deed"
And then that fateful night
We had you in our sight
After twenty months at sea
Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath
The ocean shook
The sky went black
And the captain quailed
And before us grew
The angry jaws
Of a giant whale
Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
But, O! What providence!
What divine intelligence!
That you should survive
As well as me
It gives my heart great joy
To see your eyes fill with fear
So lean in close
And I will whisper
The last words you'll hear
Bloodhound Gang - "A Lap Dance is so Much Better When the Stripper is Crying"
I was lonelier than Kunta Kinte at a Merle Haggard concert that night I strolled on into Uncle Limpy's Hump Palace looking for love. It had been a while. In fact, three hundred and sixty-five had come and went since that midnight run haulin' hog to Shakey Town on I-one-o. I had picked up this hitchhiker that was sweatin' gallons through a pair of Daisy Duke cutoffs and one of those Fruit of the Loom tank tops. Well, that night I lost myself to ruby red lips, milky-white skin, and baby blue eyes. Her name was Russell.
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is crying
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is crying
Well, I find it's quite a thrill
When she grinds me against her will
Yes, a lap dance is so much better when the stripper is crying
Well, faster than you can say "shallow grave," this purty little thing come up to me and starts kneading my balls like hard-boiled eggs in a tube sock. Said her name was Bambi. And I said, "Well that's a coincidence, darling. 'Cause I was just thinking about skinning you like a deer." Well, she smiled; had about as much teeth as a jack-o'-lantern. And I went on to tell her how I would wear her face like a mask as I do my little kooky dance. And then she told me to shush. I guess she could sense my desperation. Course, it's hard to hide a hard-on when you're dressed like Minnie Pearl.
So, Bambi's going on about how she can make all my fantasies come true. So I says, "Even this one I have where Jesus Christ is jackhammering Mickey Mouse in the doo-doo hole with a lawn dart as Garth Brooks gives birth to something resembling a cheddar cheese log with almonds on Santa Claus's tummy-tum?" Well, ten beers, twenty minutes, and thirty dollars later I'm parking the beef bus in Tuna Town if you know what I mean. Got to nail her back at her trailer. Heh, that rhymes! I have to admit, it was even more of a turn-on when I found out she was doing me to buy baby formula.
A day or so had passed when I popped the clutch, gave the tranny a spin, and slid on in to the Stinky Pinky Gulp n' Guzzle Big Rig Snooze n' Stop. There I was, browsing through the latest issue of Throb, when I saw Bambi staring at me from the back of a milk carton. Well, my heart just dropped. So, I decided to do what any good christian would. You cannot imagine how difficult it is to hold a half-gallon of moo juice and polish the one-eyed gopher when you're doing 75 in an eighteen-wheeler. I never thought missing children could be so sexy... Did I say that out loud?
