MGM gets its 'Stooges'
Penn, Carrey, Del Toro part of studio's plan

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for "The Three Stooges."

Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard.

The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.

The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.

The quest by the Peter and Bobby Farrelly to harness the project spans more than a decade and three studios. They first tried at Columbia, again at Warner Bros., and finally at MGM, where Worldwide Motion Picture Group chairman Mary Parent championed the cause and bought the WB-owned scripts and made a deal with Stooges rights holders C3.

Production will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010. The Farrellys, who wrote the script, are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas, and Charlie Wessler.

C3 Entertainment principals Earl and Robert Benjamin will be executive producers.

Project will get underway after Penn completes the Asger Leth-directed Universal/Imagine Entertainment drama "Cartel." He hasn't done a comedy since the 1989 laffer "We're No Angels."

The Farrellys have long had their eyes on Del Toro to play Moe. Del Toro, who's coming off "Che," showed comic chops in the Guy Ritchie-directed "Snatch."

The surprise is the emergence of Carrey to play Curly. Howard established the character as a seminal physical comedian, from the first time he appeared in the first Stooges short in 1934 until he suffered a stroke on the set in 1946....I my have to see this one, I'm a little ashamed to admit. With that cast, that movie, and the Farrelly Bros., I just don't feel right waiting for DVD, rofl

Some things... I can't imagine modernized. I mean, if they make it take place in modern times, that would be weird. That style of humor usually isn't very popular today, either. Of course, no one will argue against the fact that the Three Stooges are legends in their own rights. But I really have mixed feelings about this. Curious, I am.

Who knows. They might do it in a similar style that they did the The Brady Bunch Movie (1995) which I thought was funny. I like the actors they've rounded up so I can already tell curiosity will get the best of me on this one. I'm sure it'll either be a movie people love or hate but if it's being done by the Farrelly brothers (Dumb & Dumber, Something About Mary, Me, Myself, and Irene) then I think I'll be comfortable seeing it in theaters. I've either thoroughly enjoyed or been fairly entertained by all of their others movies so I don't expect personal disappointment.

I don't really see Sean Penn in a role like this. I also don't know how I feel about a modern version of The Three Stooges. Since slapstick really isn't that popular of a comedic form anymore, is it really appropriate to drag up this IP and beat it into a movie form?

Well, Sean Penn's done other characters than Harvey Milk. Remember Sam, as in I Am Sam? He can play stupid quite well.

I didn't see Milk, so I don't know about that character. Larry wasn't really stupid, though. He was a buffoon. Like funny-stupid, not heartwarming-stupid.

I guess I could see Benicio del Toro as Moe, although Jim Carrey would have to undergo significant physical change to look like Curly.

Admittedly, I had to look up pictures of the trio, as it's been a long time since I've seen them. I can see how Sean Penn would fit the role, but as far as acting the role, I don't know.

Let the classics stay classics... Why, world? WHY?!

Let the classics stay classics... Why, world? WHY?!This. Sequels, remakes, etc. should be banned, or at least have a few years' moratorium. Come up with some original ideas.

Apparently they're running out of original ideas.

^ Apparently Johnny Depp was rumored to play Moe for a while. That would have been... odd.

Well I say there's no harm in a remake. If you think it will ruin the classics, simply don't watch it.
