In this comedy, Paul Rudd discovers proposing to his girlfriend (Rashida Jones, THE OFFICE) might have been the easiest part of getting married. Now he has to find a male friend to be his best man.... In this comedy, Paul Rudd discovers proposing to his girlfriend (Rashida Jones, THE OFFICE) might have been the easiest part of getting married. Now he has to find a male friend to be his best man. I LOVE YOU, MAN also stars Andy Samberg (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) and Jason Segel (FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL).
So the plot sounds lame.
The director is John Hamburg who was a screenwriter for Meet The Parents and a director for Along Came Polly. Both movies inspired a "Meh" out of me. Funny moments, not horrible films, but not terribly great in my opinion.
However, despite the obstacles of quality, this movie is actually getting reviewed incredibly well for a comedy. RottenTomatoes.com is currently giving it a fresh 80%!
Some of the favorable reviews:
• ...starts with a high concept that Rudd and Segel take to the finish line. This is a buddy movie that women can enjoy, a surprisingly sweet take on male friendship that still has its testosterone intact.
• Hilariously funny from beginning to end, "I Love You Man" will always be remembered as the film that launched Paul Rudd onto the "A" list.
• Man crushes have been around since Jesus and Peter, Tom Hanks and the other dude from "Bosom Buddies," and Tom Hanks and that mute volleyball Wilson from "Castaway." But they've never been hotter then here
Unfavorable ones:
• Unfortunately, Segel is overbearing as a know-it-all who isn't really a character but a collection of humorous quirks
• Paul Rudd is good as the awkward guy, perhaps too good. He makes the audience cringe and that is never a plus.
• A bang-up comedy for about 40 minutes that hits, misses and meanders after that.
I'm kinda curious to see it. I really expected it to bomb with critics so the fact that it's pulling an 80% has really thrown me. Has anyone else seen it or does anyone plan on seeing it?
