Here is where all banning will be announced.

Everyone who has been banned prior to creation of this forums has not been banned. It has been erased. However, for those who has been banned, yes this means they are given a chance, but will be watched, should they return.

FootfetishCharlie has been perma-banned, for registration to harrass a staff (Charlie in particular).

BillmasterZ has been indefinitely banned, for shitstorm of spams, harassment, and hack threats.

Jasmin Jaquine

Also banned is:

AnimeLoverZ for Multiple Accounts on UEF - perma-banned

CircumventZ for Multiple Accounts on UEF - perma-banned

They found us already!

I will be installing modification to make it even more difficult for spamvertisers to ,well you know, spam.

Frozen is taking a 3 day break.
He basically flipped his middle finger to admins and mods who were telling him to stop annoying them.

Since 3 days did nothing, how about we just give Frozen the rest of the month off? He's got his Wii. He'll be fine.

(I take it "Kitty" was changed as well from a profane version, along with "Love" = F-Bomb)

Jasmin Jaquine
07-10-2008, 12:43
Yeah, Kitty was changed as well. Pussy just....I don't know...never really liked the word. Though maybe next time I'll change all the F-Words to Cookie. That would also be acceptable.

We'll let him stay gone for the next week, see how he is when he gets back and then do a month and go from there.

Bloodcinder
07-10-2008, 13:06
I am not challenging you, but what is this policy of progressively scaled test-bannings? At which point is the ban indefinite, especially after the same user has previously been under an indefinite ban? (As I said, I am asking based on curiosity about the policy; I am not questioning your authority or judgment.)

Jasmin Jaquine
07-10-2008, 13:11
I don't think we actually have a policy. It's more....how Gio, Chef, and I feel. *Whispers* Though I believe Chef is the most lenient of all of us. *Giggles*

Frozen was doing really well for a few days, and then he got provoked a little. He has displayed a little (however small it may be) capability to learn to not be so bad. So he may actually get more chances than others that are here to simply post porn and such.

Gio Takahashi
07-10-2008, 13:34
We're going to come up with a normal banning procedure soon, and it will be posted in this forums.

Sometimes, I think Frozen's just doing it to rattle our cage, and piss us off. I don't think he'll really care if he's ban, as much as Bill does.

Bloodcinder
07-10-2008, 13:38
I know that Frozen is sometimes being sarcastic and just not conveying it well. (He does have that capacity.) But it seems like he's getting the Fibonacci sequence of bannings.

Im sorry to question judgement, but i dont really understand why he was banned then came back, he obviously just liked the attention. For that, i would have banned him good from the beginning. For what he said to gio, i dont think he should have been allowed back... :\

Did anyone REALLY want him around anyway?

Personally i dont think the banning for a moment really gets through to people... a warning maybe in a message and then a ban for good, but a ban then allowing them back just makes people think that you dont mean business. Well thats just my opinion.

At RonDo's suggestion, I've temporarily disabled new user registration while this global spam attack settles down.

Hold on... you DISABLED registration? How stupid, no matter who's idea it was. The CAPTCHA and user E-Mail confirmation should be enough to cut down on the worst of it. From there, the staff can just delete any posts/ban any accounts that make their way through all that. Completely cutting off user registration is NOT a good idea, by any means. You want the forum to be successful. Not falter. And this obviously sends it down a fast track towards everything.

Gio Takahashi
10-02-2008, 06:08
the registration has been enabled as said in the update thread, and it was temporary measure to stop the spammers from registering. It does pretty much confirm that they're bots not humans (as there was a debate about it on vbulletin.com official forums), anyway, there hasn't been any new registration attempt, and the registration is open, just now moderated. IE, an admin have to approve the user so they can post.

How about you institute a validation question? Works wonders.

Works better than image capchas by a mile.

Hold on... you DISABLED registration? How stupid, no matter who's idea it was. The CAPTCHA and user E-Mail confirmation should be enough to cut down on the worst of it. It wasn't even for an entire day, just a couple of hours while we waited for an Admin to come on, hence the term temporarily disabled. Gio set it to Moderate Registration. The CAPTCHA and E-mail confirmations were in place, I believe, but failed. They did not work and so far the registration moderation has. That said, it was a good idea and the only idea that has shown any sign of success.

Completely cutting off user registration is NOT a good idea, by any means. You want the forum to be successful. Not falter. And this obviously sends it down a fast track towards everything. As stated before, it was obviously not a permanent solution but rather a working means for a then-current problem until something better could be implemented.

In the past two months, every new members that has joined has been brought by someone currently at the forums so, statistically, it could be assumed that chances are, if we're getting a new member, we already know about it because one of us brought them rather than it being a random person who stumbled upon the site.

Had the action not been taken, the 10+ (and counting) spamvertisers that registered could have easily attacked the forums all night while staff was asleep or scarce. We discussed it in Staff Discussion, considered the consequences, and agreed it was the best course of action for right now. With the Registration Moderation in place, though, I believe it should work even better as the current solution until better security measures can be implemented. We will both be able to see legitimate people who register and be able to reject any bot attempts to register.

Why not just set a limit on threads creatable for new users to one thread (on the first day), and that thread be limited to the welcome place. Or perhaps a limit of one post per 5 minutes until an admin "approves" the account.

That way, real people can still register and be human and get permission to post more/post threads, but bots/spammers will have a harder time.

As for the bot problem, I thought we had a security question, or were working on making one that was answerable to all normal people?

I am adamantly against moderated registration. What will it prevent other than making it harder for real members to register? All you can really look at is their name, right?

It bugs me because there have been many cases where I registered at a forum in order to ask a question to a problem I was working on, but I couldn't ask until I was approved and it could take hours or the whole day, and by then, I didn't need the help. While this isn't a tech-support forum, it still pisses me off when I have to deal with it.

Besides, I think there are a LOT more and better solutions than moderated registrations.

Assuming moderated registration is a frustrating deterrent for 'real' people to join, how are such limitations as you have proposed less of a deterrent?

If I joined a forum and, for some strange reason, couldn't post more than a single thread or seemingly more than a single post, I'd just as soon leave that forum thinking it was bugged. At least with moderated registration the user trying to join receives an email explaining that the account must be approved.

As for the bot problem, I thought we had a security question, or were working on making one that was answerable to all normal people? There is a "Random Question" in place. When I logged out just now and tried to register, the random question was "Random Question: two plus what is equal to ten?"

My guess is the bots are scripted to answer all the vB random questions so it may have to be a static, custom question if it has any hope of working and you'll have to talk to the G-Man about getting that done.

I am adamantly against moderated registration. What will it prevent other than making it harder for real members to register? All you can really look at is their name, right?Well the first time we did it, it prevented a similar swarm of bots for months. I would hope for the same result this time around.

The last time we did it on 10-1-08 after getting swarmed by bots and then reset registration back to normal about 10-8-08 and have been practically bot-free ever since up until this week.

It bugs me because there have been many cases where I registered at a forum in order to ask a question to a problem I was working on, but I couldn't ask until I was approved and it could take hours or the whole day, and by then, I didn't need the help. While this isn't a tech-support forum, it still pisses me off when I have to deal with it.Were we rich or even middle-class wealthy with new members, I would agree. Fact is, though, we get less than 1 new, active member every 3 months or so.

Vbulletin have no default "question set". I added in those questions myself, and removed the one about Bahamut and FF. It is tough to think of questions that are complex for bots to answer, and simple for people to answer.

Then send an email for my proposition as well. It should be the same notification as moderated registration, except you're entitled to a few public words before you get the moderator approval.

Were we rich or even middle-class wealthy with new members, I would agree. Fact is, though, we get less than 1 new, active member every 3 months or so.

If I recall, one member was awaiting approval for some time and did not get it until chef noticed it. One incident is enough for me to be opposed. We don't need a bunch. Every member is valuable.

Gio Takahashi

Gio, what is this human verification system?

Human verification system is when you have to verify that you are a human. We're using Recaptcha system now. I turned that on last night. So far, it is working. No bot registrations today.

Z

That's my point. Maybe if they had been able to join when they were in the mood to, they'd still be around now.

It' a moot discussion at this point so I will make it quick but the person is question was Forte-chan who was previously a uef vet so I don't believe she came back, made a welcome thread, and then decided not to because of her delay in registration recognition. Otherwise why make a welcome thread at all? But, again, the discussion is moot at this point so we can move on.

Hopefully the new verification will get the job done. I believe BC only suggested the registration moderation due to a lack of effective alternative which is why I agreed with it but if the new verification works then the problem is clearly solved.

Gio Takahashi
02-08-2009, 13:09
I'd like to mention that Forte-chan's presence on the forums has always been sporadic. After a period of sticking around on the forums, she had a history of disappearing, coming back, making one or two posts and disappear for several weeks to nearly a year.

Even if the new human verification doesn't work, I'm going to try other methods before resorting to moderating registration.

I thought the question was a human verification system?

Gio Takahashi
02-08-2009, 13:26
yeah, apparently, it didn't work so well. I assume that bots could 'scan' the questions and answer it.

the new one takes a couple of words in the image, barely readable, and you have to type down what it says.

Need to make a better human verification question. One that can't be so easily programmed. How about: What is four plus four divided by two. Answer: six, order of operations.

Either that, or these aren't bots, or the bots do all the work, but the verification stuff gets somehow sent to humans who sit and answer capchas all day.

I still say you should impose limits on new users until approved by a moderator. It would be just like requiring moderator approval to register except they could still do things while waiting.

Yes, zerugaze has been banned.

Ah, I didn't see his sig (still can't actually).

That's pretty weird; those bots are getting smarter. He put two VG threads in the video game forum and put a joke image in the House of Ha Ha. All the other bots were putting their welcome threads in Recording room and whatnot. Craziness!

What struck you to research this, Ron? I never thought anything significant about Exodus, and that suspicion never occurred to me.

Z
03-24-2009, 01:37
Exodus always shows up after one of Bill's "Can I come back" threads (which non-staff can't really see because it's in the emergency forum and is moderated). I had a feeling there might be something more to that and notified staff. Then Bill (as Exodus) made a telling post in the Hentai thread (Which can be seen HERE (http://images.icanhascheezburger.com/completestore/2009/2/18/128794553471774026.jpg)) which seemed to suggest there was definitely more to this connection. Finally, BC put a tack in it by doing an IP search which confirmed our suspicions.

Seegtease
03-24-2009, 01:39
Ah, I didn't check the times. I did see the thread by billmaster as guest, and I figured it took place AFTER Exodus was banned. I couldn't see why else he'd make that thread otherwise.
