Some guy interviewed Johnny Depp about his upcoming projects and Dark Shadows is apparently one of them. Here's what was said in the interview:

when I asked him about “Dark Shadows”, I could see the enthusiasm in his eyes as he said, “‘Dark Shadows’ is happening. Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”For those who are unfamiliar...

Dark Shadows is a Gothic soap opera that originally aired weekdays on the ABC television network, from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971. The show was created by Dan Curtis, who tells of a dream he had in which a girl takes a long train ride to visit a large mansion. The story "bible," which was written by Art Wallace, does not mention any supernatural elements. It was considered daring (and unprecedented in daytime television) when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began.

The series became hugely popular when, a year into its run, vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Jonathan Frid, appeared. In addition to vampires, Dark Shadows featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel (both into the past and into the future), and a parallel universe. A small company of actors each played many roles and, as actors came and went, some characters were played by several actors. Major writers in addition to Art Wallace included Sam Hall, Gordon Russell, and Violet Welles.

Dark Shadows was distinguished by its vividly melodramatic performances, atmospheric interiors, memorable story lines and an unusually adventurous music score. Now regarded as somewhat of a camp classic, it continues to enjoy intense cult status among its followers. Director Tim Burton and pop icon Madonna have both gone on record as fans of the series. As a child Johnny Depp was so obsessed with Barnabas Collins that he wanted to be him[1].

Good news fans of Johnny Depp. Or fans of the vampire Barnabas Collins. Back in June, a few weeks ago, Depp told press that "Dark Shadows is happening." And that "when Tim is done with Alice and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we'll probably attack it next year. It's exciting, very exciting. It's like a lifelong dream for me." Well, MTV talked with Burton recently and got a separate update that confirms that he is, indeed, shooting Dark Shadows next year. "That's something that [Depp and I] both love and are excited about," the director told them. "When I'm done with this I'll definitely focus on that."

"It's another challenge because it was such a weird soap opera," Burton explains. "Part of the energy of it was the tone and weirdness of it. That's our challenge, to try to capture that vibe." Dark Shadows was a horror TV show that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, logging over 1200 episodes filled with ghosts, ghouls, vampires, zombies, werewolves, parallel universes, and time-paradoxes. That vibe Burton is talking about was "part campy melodrama, part dead serious—and decidedly odd—storytelling." So which direction will Burton take this in? "That’s a question and a challenge we talk about a lot. I haven’t arrived at the answer."

So there you have it - as long as things come together, we'll be seeing Depp as Barnabas Collins sometime late next year (or early 2011). I'm sure we'll hear a lot more from Burton coming up soon as he's appearing at Comic-Con. And I'm sure we'll have a big update by the time Alice in Wonderland hits next March.
