View Full Version : What anime have you most recently watched?

RonDo
05-31-2008, 17:46
A simple thread asking for generally simple responses.

What is the latest anime you have seen? This could be from youtube, torrentz, DVDs, TV, voyeurism.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me, the last thing I watched was the Season 1 boxed set of One Piece from Funimation.

There is little comparison of this version of One Piece to the absolutely horrific thing that 4Kids did to it. I am so thankful it is out of their hands. The transfer seemed crystal clear and just jumped off my LCD tv. Recommended.

Emm, it was... ef - Tale of the memories. My only source is torrents. I don't really even have a choice, as flash doesn't work, and I can't flexibly buy them let alone hoping something coming from TV(I actually don't have working TV, mine works only with consoles).

It's ok, but I had hard time watching it. Maybe it just isn't suited to me, but I can't recommend it to must watch -list. Some of my friend though have said it to be very good, but...

My latest is the complete series of Negima! (another Ken Akamatsu one), and prior to that was a fantastic series called The Story of Saiunkoku / Saiunkoku Monogatari. That one was awesome, however since Geneon has english rights, they've only got 8 episodes out so far. So I had to download the 38 eps. of the first series, working on the 38 from the second.

Haha, I saw it when they were running it on Spike TV with Samuel L. Jackson voicing one of the characters. It was pretty cool.

Before that (and it's been years) was the full series of Hellsing (which is now continuing in Manga form) and Vampire Hunter D & VHD: Bloodlust. The first isn't bad, so to speak. The sequel, however, is awesome.

Requiem from The Darkness

So far the series has my attention. It is basically a young man wanting to write a book called 100 stories. These stories are to be filled with dark horror stories. His journey has brought him in contact with three other characters who seem to always be finding out the truth behind the stories talk about (i.e. town folk lore, mysterious murders, etc). I am glad I spent only $5 a DVD at www.rightstuf.com awhile back. I don't think, at this point, I would have spent anything else. The set was basically $20 and good entertainment for that price. The stories are interesting, the anime style is very unique (water colors, bold borders on non-characters, 3D with 2D overlay like Yoshi's Island for SNES), and it can be very disturbing.

If you like the "darker side" of anime, you may want to check out a trailer or view an episode somewhere.

X Remix

The first episode is really confusing. They are trying to introduce all the main characters of the series and, for me, it was just too much with everything else that is going on. Get past the first episode and the storyline starts to get going. In fact I would skip most of the first episode.

This is an anime series about the destruction or salvation of the world. There are 7 dragons of heaven and 7 dragons of earth. Those of heaven want to save the earth while those of the earth want to end it. One guy, an impatient, selfish, heartless, teenager is the key to the whole story. Whatever side he chooses will ultimately determine the fate of the world.

I have finished 1/5 DVD's for the series and find it a lot more appealing then my previous series Requiem of The Darkness. You should be able to view them somewhere online. In fact, check out www.animeondvd.com for their much more in depth review of the series.

Pok?mon (ポケモン, Pokemon? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese), IPA: /ˈpoʊkeɪmɒn, ˈpɒkimɒn/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English)) is a media franchise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_franchise) owned by the video game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game) company Nintendo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo) and created by Satoshi Tajiri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Tajiri) around 1995

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon

Therefore, Pokemon came first.

Now, back to somewhat more serious note,

Killer_Man_

Ahem, I already posted a link. I posted about when the first TV show in Jap aired. So there.

Second, most people think because they are oh nos, MONSTERS WHO FIGHT BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Like I said, Digimon started out as a little device like digipets for males who could train, raise, evolve and battle by hooking up. Then the creator got an idea to make a show out of it.

Ralphs
07-30-2008, 02:03

Mnemosyne was too short!Too true, but it doesn't really seem like they could go back and add episodes that occurred in the interim. They pretty much closed all the story arcs at the end, so there'd be no more mysterious background for them to partially reveal at the end of every episode. Maybe they could do a prequel?

So far it's not bad but nothing too spectacular. Like Inuyasha meets Hellsing (He even does the patented Alucard gun-bite... See attachment) I'll give Episode 2 a viewing tomorrow. Hopefully it focus a bit more on lore with the coming episodes.

I recently watched Gravitation. I'd never heard of it, but got sent an email ad for it by a company I'd bought some stuff from. I read up about it and it sounded quite interesting so when I found a boxset going cheap on Amazon marketplace I bought it.

It's a yaoi story. While I'm not heavily into yaoi, I do quite enjoy it if the guys involved are cute, and I found Gravitation quite gripping after the first few episodes. The main character, Shuichi, is irritating (he vaguely reminded me of Naruto), but the guy he falls for is intriguing and I found myself wanting to keep watching to discover what made him tick.

Texhnolyze. Strange anime. Reminds of Lain a bit, but imho much worse. But it’s ok.

To Z... I don’t understand about US’ censoring policy anything. It’s totally nonsense. Inuyasha manga doesn’t seem really gruesome at all for me...

Well Z, if it came from Funimation..then it wasn't InuYasha. That would be Viz.

As for the most recent (aside from CN, AS, and SciFi), Lucky Star vol.3 - Shuffle vol.6 - Karin vol.4.

Viz, then, lawl. *shrugs*

To rephrase the question: "Is the one playing on Adult Swim a censored version or are they pretty much showing the series as it is?" I thought I remembered seeing clips from some YouTube video where Inuyasha was just cursing it up and had a massive amount of blood 'splosions, heh, and gore.

It's censored for sure..but done as little as they could so they could squeak it in on [AS]. Speaking of which, I need to start working on picking up that series..slowly. It is a bit pricey over the entire span of DVDs.

It isn't so much that we have weak stomachs...it is that we cannot stop bitching about things that we have control over, to an extent. (Don't like what is showing? Changing the frickin' channel and use parental lock, damnit!)

Too over protective so many people complain and censor the shit out of stuff until they are marginally satisfied. At least, that is kinda how I see it. I abhor censorship. (Abhor, is that right?)

NEEDZ MOAR ANIMEZ

I'm taking the plunge and am going to watch the second half of Code Geass R2. I've had it downloaded, but since the first half wasn't as depressing as the first half, while everyone's been warning about how depressing R2 is overall, I haven't worked up the courage to watch it.

(After watching ep 13)
;_;
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
*sniff*
Ok, no, really, I'm fine.

Oh, and I'm going to raise a dead horse, but KM, earlier (much earlier, heh), you were saying that Avenger has one of the best openings. I beg to differ. While I'm sure the animation in the background is pretty cool, that music just really irks me.
PRE-POST EDIT: Ok, I forced myself to sit through it all the way and yeah, it's pretty good. I still say the music irks me, though.

I submit, for your consideration, the openings to Spice and Wolf/Wolf and Spice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZkVmtYgQIc&feature=related) as well as Vision of Escaflowne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfVu42oYqjU). Catchy music as well as pretty animation!

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankutsuou)

Not the traditional way to animate, nor is it a strict retelling of the story.

You know how flannel patterns are traditionally represented, where it seems like it's a layer beneath the animation and all the animation that's supposed to be flannel is clear to show the flannel underneath, so the flannel pattern stays absolute and doesn't move and shift like a normal pattern would? Every pattern or texture in the anime is like that, often giving a feeling of vertigo or that you're watching a stop-motion picture made with fabric swatches.

Set in future-historic Paris (think Steampunk in the year 5053), the anime largely follows the original plot as the novel, but sticks in different elements to promote a more sci-fi flavor or to bring things up-to-date. For example, the Count doesn't meet Albert and Franz in Rome, but rather on the moon (Luna) during a very similar setting of the Roman Carnival. When Albert challenges the Count to a duel, instead of fighting in the woods, they get giant armor suit mechas and duke it out, trashing a memorial square in a forest. Although locales like Paris, Normandy and Marseilles are preserved, things like the far-away country of Janina is instead an alien planet and the Ch?teau d'If is some kind of asteroid deep-space prison.

Also different from the novel, instead of focusing on the Count's story of revenge, the anime is closer to a coming-of-age story for Albert, who is rudely awakened from a sheltered idyllic aristocratic childhood to the harsh world of political intrigue and two-facedness, when he gets used as the end to means for certain parties to achieve their evil goals. Also, instead of being a linear tale following the count, the anime starts out in medias res, follows Albert (and Franz) from their adventures on Luna, and gradually reveals all the characters' histories and motives in either flashbacks or exposition.

Exciting!

Oh, and I also watched the Blue Submarine No. 6 OVA, which was pretty good with good music as well, but a bit short and a bit weird. No, seriously, really weird.

I found an online version (and not crappy youtube quality) of the trailer I have that came with my download that will give you a good idea of how the animation works (heh, a lot better than my poor description, that's for sure) as well as a decent sample of the drama, emotion, intrigue, and music that's in store for watchers.

So Mydra was right. Kaiba is very interesting. It's pretty hard to follow (I didn't think it was the translation so much as how strange the story is) but it just seemed to strike a chord with me, so I kept at it.

Alsothis is one of those animes where seemingly-significant plot-driving characters get offed either in the episode they're introduced in or in the next episode. It's really strange how it happens, too. That they get killed isn't that integral to the plot (the method they get killed by kinda is) (also, there is no conspiracy behind their deaths; I kind of feel all these remarks about it are extremely misleading, though, so just watch it), but I spoilered all this because if you don't know they're about to get killed, it's a better shock when it happens.

Anywho, finally sat down and watched Blacklagoon, and Blacklagoon Second Barrage, and I have no idea what took me so long to watch this series! Reminds me of Cowboy Bebop minus the future. Defiently worth looking into, especialy considering the third season comes out a few months!

High School Of the dead, as mentioned in the Summer 2010 lineup.

It is a VERY brutal anime for zombie apocalypse. I heard the manga is even more brutal. However, it's a pretty damn good anime overall. Graphic is VERY well done, and looking at Animesuki forums, this anime is exploding on popularity, that it already got licensed >.>

Apparently if it follows the manga it'll have less Zombie slaying and more fan service. I mean, we already found out that Zombies want boobs instead of brains.

Or how about the shaky camera while using stills? Or how the boobs must have had their own physics artist.
