June 16, 2008 - IGN has confirmed, via a representative at The Gersh Agency, that special effects pioneer Stan Winston has died at the age of 62.
UPDATE: According to an article on Variety.com (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117987531.html?categoryid=10&cs=1), which cites a rep from the Stan Winston Studio as its source, Winston died due to a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma. A formal press release from Winston's agency is forthcoming.
The story originally broke on AICN, where the site stated that they had reached out to a personal contact - and not Winston's reps - to confirm that the creator of the Predator and the Terminator exoskeleton had indeed passed away.
Winston most recently contributed to work done on bringing Iron Man's armor to the big screen. Previously, Winston won Oscars for his practical effects work on James Cameron's Aliens and T2, as well as winning for Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park.

Winston died at his home in Malibu surrounded by family on Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio.

"The entertainment industry has lost a genius, and I lost one of my best friends with the death Sunday night of Stan Winston," Gov. "Stan's work and four Oscars speak for themselves and will live on forever. At the time of his death, Winston was in the process of transforming his physical makeup and effects studio into the new Winston Effects Group with a team of senior effects supervisors. Winton's most recent projects included "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," "G.I. Joe," "Shutter Island" and Cameron's "Avatar."
As a child growing up in Virginia, Winston enjoyed drawing, puppetry and classic horror films. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1968, Winston moved to Southern California to become an actor but instead worked behind the scenes and completed a three-year makeup apprenticeship program at Walt Disney Studios in 1972.
Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.
