View Full Version : The Great Debate: Bear vs Panther.

In one corner, wearing black, we have the elusive, the mysterious...the DEADLY...

PANTHER!

http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/images/rosalindhook/2005/06/04/panther.jpg

In the other corner, sporting brown, we have the gigantic, the powerful... the UNSTOPPABLE...

BEAR!
http://www.geocities.com/heartland/3733/brownbea.jpg

Both competitors have their strengths and weaknesses. Now it is up to you to decide. WHO WOULD WIN IN A FIGHT?!

deathofcheese
07-02-2008, 15:18
Although I tend to like cats, I think the bear would win, if the bear could ever get in a shot. The panther definitely has an advantage with small size, quickness and speed, but the bear is a true powerhouse that only needs a few shots while is capable of taking many shots itself.

Z
07-02-2008, 15:21
Why is this in meditar s hut?
Because it's a debate. It's hard to tell, I know, cuz the title is a little subtle, hehe. ;)

Yeah, I think the Bear definitely has strength over the panther but I dunno. It could end with one quick swipe to the jugular (though the panther would have to get in really close...)

Killer_Man_
07-02-2008, 15:25
Yeah but remember bears can take shotgun shots and other things and STILL KEEP MOVING.

That bear would tear the shit out of a panther anyday.

Z
07-02-2008, 15:26
Really? I've never shot a bear with a shotgun. That's pretty cool.

Frozen

The bear hands down no contest no holds barn.

Z
07-02-2008, 15:28
no holds barn.

I think you mean "No holds barred" brutha. In a fight (usually wrestling matches) when they say No Holds Barred, that means you can use any wrestling/fighting hold you want to. None of them are against the rules.

Frozen
07-02-2008, 15:29
Oh i always thought they said no holds barn.

The Panther will be very fast, as the bear will be slow, it's basically speed vs power.

Granted, but the bear ran from the fight. Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we have a new aspect to consider. Bears might, in fact, be wussies!

Why die, when you can run to fight anther day? Most predators will do that.

RonDo
07-02-2008, 16:14
You take a fairly specific feline, a panther, and put it up against a generic bear. Make it more specific..how about...

A panther versus a grizzly.

Z
07-02-2008, 16:16
Either way, it doesn't change much. Gio just posted a vid of a male grizzly getting owned by a female cougar. *shrugs

But yes, it's safe to assume that the bear I'm talking about is Grizzly.

RonDo
07-02-2008, 16:21
Then I will say the panther in the natural environment. I find the cats to be a bit more fearless (and reckless) compared to the general bear population. Seeing a brown bear run from a housecat sticks in my mind...

However, if the two were pitted against each other and they would fight head on (no running away), I'd give the edge to the bear. Going for the juggular would be kinda tough if the bear is on its hind legs before attacking (swipes).

Z
07-02-2008, 16:28
Very true. However. using the vid as a reference, the grizzly didn't seem to try and go hind legged when it started getting attacked (before it ran away). It was even lazy with its swipes. The cougar was able to bite right on his ear, wrap his arm around the back of it's neck, and it left the fight, uninjured, as the Bear tucked-tail and ran.

I definitely think, though, that a pissed off fight-you-to-the-death type bear vs the same type panther would be a hell of a fight to see. I'd actually have to start thinking about how much stamina would be involved in one of those fights. I don't see a panther charging into a roaring pissed off bear so maybe it could keep distance and try to tire the bear down *shrugs*

deathofcheese
07-02-2008, 17:32
I have yet to be shown video evidence of a decent fight or encounter between a large bear and a large cat. So far, it seems that bears largely think "this isn't worth my time, they have such a hard time struggling to survive as it is, I'll take pity on them and let them live...for now" and will leave the encounter. Kinda seems like they follow the "with great power comes great responsibility" philosophy. With such awesome powers of beastiness, they have to hold themselves back to prevent being too kickass.

Z
07-02-2008, 18:03
Or they could be thinking "I gotta get over to that tree over there. I could try and go through the panther but then I will get face pwned. Then again, I could go around the panther and not get face pwned." *Panther facepwns bear* "WAIT! I wasn't ready! Screw you guys! I'm going home!"

Bears run because they know it's smart to. But they have so many friggin' HPs the panther would have to get a lot of crits in to even do a dent. The bear will run because it doesn't want to get hurt, even if it knows it can win.

Bears run because they know it's smart to.I think you're giving bears too much intellectual credit. They'll attack a person's campsite even though people have been known to carry boomsticks that not only hurt but kill them.

Keeping a distance because you don't want to get swiped is one thing. Contemplating the possible outcomes of a fight against a smaller animal and then deciding that it would be less of a hassle to simply leave is another.

If it left, I think it left because it's a wussy, not because it accurately analyzed the situation.

Every time you say "most" you are engaging in absolutes. Regardless, what I am saying is that as cool as you think bears are they really don't hold up that well to artillery, not generally enough to survive to learn their "mistake" of being near a human.

What is up with all this most people can't kill a bear with a gun business, KM?

People go bear hunting all the time. They kill them, too. It's possible for a bear to survive a gunshot. It's possible for a human to survive a gunshot. The threshold for a bear is just greater then a human. A human could be killed with a well places 22 shot. A bear? Maybe if you hit it in the eye and it went to the brain, I don't know.

There is a boomstick powerful enough for any animal. If you're going after a bear with buckshot, you're a moron.

Lots of people know how to use guns. You say most don't, but I say most hunters DO know how to fire with at least fair accuracy. I can. But if you want to kill a bear, you'd need some decent caliber. They still die, and people do it all the time. They don't use tranqs. That's what they use to tag or capture animals. Hunters use guns.
