FDA declares it's OK to eat tomatoes again

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. government has declared it's OK to eat tomatoes again, lifting its salmonella warning amid signs that the outbreak—while not over—may finally be slowing.

Officials reiterated earlier warnings that the people most at risk of salmonella should avoid hot peppers—jalapenos and serranos.

The government still doesn't know just what caused the salmonella outbreak, and Thursday's move doesn't mean tomatoes are cleared. Early on, there was good evidence linking them to the sick, but it's unlikely that any field where tomatoes were harvested in April and May still is in production.

But among later illnesses, there seems to be more evidence against peppers. The FDA is sending inspectors to Mexico to investigate a packing house that receives peppers from a number of farms.

Man, that took a while. McDonalds, Taco Bell, and several other fastfood joined stopped serving tomatoes completely. I can do without them on burgers and all but Mexican food without tomatoes?! Oh teh em gee!

I ordered a Cheesey Beefy Burrito at Taco Bell (Yes, thats the actual product name, lol) and the lack of tomato just game me cotton mouth the whole time I was eating it. Needless to say, I haven't eaten any more mexican food since. I'll have to get some this weekend though, now that THE TOMATOES ARE BACK! YAY! :D

Yeah, but now they're pulling jalapenos. At least Chipotle is, and a couple of local places. You can keep your damned tomatoes, I want my peppers back.

I like Jalepeno Poppers (Poppers being battered jalepenos, not a typo) but I hardly ever eat it with anything else but, ya, I can imagine that sucks just as much not to have them for you as the lack of tomatoes sucked for me. My mom actually grows her own peppers out in her garden because my dad loves them so much (he likes all spicy foods) so I think they will be fine throughout the investigation.

...McDonalds, Taco Bell, and the like stopped using tomatoes and I didn't know about it? How out of touch do you have to be to be out of the loop on fast food?!

I've gotta start watching the news again...-_-

Wait, what? They stopped serving tomatoes?

The only time I wasn't served tomatoes was once or twice while I was up in Connecticut. No one stopped serving them in SC. No wonder I've been real gassy recently. :P

We only had to stop for a short time until we were confirmed to be safe. Didn't know there was still a scare. Still, a lot of people ask for no tomatoes due to paranoia.

I'm with Ary. I take off the tomatoes anyways and I'll take my chances with the peppers.

Lawl. We've had tomatoes for a long time, since the silly scare. Maybe people should develop immune systems. xD
